alhuda.school is the Qur'an study app of Al Huda Secondary School. It is used in class by the school's students and teachers. This page says what the app keeps about a student, who can see it, and for how long.

What the school gives the app

For each student in a class that uses the app, the school office provides the student's name, student number, school email address, gender and date of birth, and each parent's or guardian's name and email address. Nothing else from the school's records: no home address, no phone numbers, no emergency contacts, no health information.

What Google passes the app

Students sign in with their school Google account. Google passes the app three things: the student's name, their school email address, and their Google account ID (a number that stays the same even if the school later renames the address). The app keeps these so it knows which student is signing in.

What the app records as a student works

So their teacher can see how the class is doing, and the student can pick up where they left off, the app records:

• What they finish: lessons, practice, drills and quizzes, and when.
• Their answers: each practice and quiz answer and whether it was right, and anything they write in a lesson.
• How long they spend on each screen of a lesson or practice, and when they step away from the app and come back. Only time in the app is measured.
• When they sign in, and the kind of device and browser they used (for example "Chromebook · Chrome"). Not the device's internet (IP) address, and not its location.
• When they last had the app open, and on which page, so a teacher can see who is in the app during class.
• The daily goal they choose: how many minutes a day they mean to give. They can change it on their profile.

Points and streaks are worked out from these records. Nothing extra is kept for them.

What the app does not keep

No passwords: sign-in is handled by Google and the app never sees one. Nothing else from the Google account: no mail, no files, no contacts, no location. The app uses no advertising, analytics or tracking services. Nothing is sold, shared with advertisers, or used to train any system.

On the student's device

One cookie keeps a student signed in, for up to 30 days, and another lasts only as long as signing in takes. If the welcome screens a student meets on their first visit ever fail to open, a third lets them go straight to their path, for an hour. The browser also remembers two small things for the app: whether it is shown light or dark, and which of the path's small celebrations have already played. Neither is sent anywhere.

Who can see it

The teachers and school staff who run the Qur'an course, for teaching and assessment. No one else has a login. The app does not email or message parents, guardians or anyone else. Parents and guardians receive what the school reports; they can ask the school office about their child's record at any time.

Where it is stored, and for how long

Records are stored with Cloudflare, which hosts the app, encrypted in transit and at rest. Like any web host, Cloudflare also keeps short-lived technical logs of the app's traffic for a few days. A student's record is deleted when they leave the course, or earlier on request to the school.
